Riverside County mailed out 5,000 duplicate ballots in error, but double votes won’t go through
A federal court says the County Elections Department should have more carefully checked the information it supplied on the 5,000 duplicate ballots. The ruling Tuesday, Sept. 29 by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, upheld the decision by Circuit Judge Diane Sykes to order the county elections board to send the ballots back to the voters. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the decision has “the potential for creating confusion and disenfranchisement” of voters due to the lack of information provided by the Elections Department.

“Wisconsin voters who receive a duplicate ballot need not be surprised when their voting experience is marred by a failure to follow proper election procedures,” says the Republican Party of Wisconsin in a statement after the lawsuit was filed. “The law is clear that our government must provide voters who receive a duplicate ballot with accurate information, and the state courts have upheld the right of the voters to have the original ballot in their possession.”
Sykes ordered the county elections board to redo its mailing out of the duplicate ballots Wednesday.
